As much as we might want to experience joy ourselves, it is even easier to want the people we love and care about to be full of joy. As you think about your own loved ones, what are the types of things you hope and pray for on their behalf? Write out their names and one thing you’d like them to experience in their faith in Jesus.

As we read through the opening of Paul’s letter, he continues to express how special the people in this church are to him.

“So it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News. God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus.
I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.”
Philippians 1:7-11

Paul wants his readers to experience love, knowledge, understanding, and good character – but not in small doses. He prays that they will be full and overflowing!
  • Which of the things that Paul lists would you like to experience more of in your journey with God?
  • Take a moment to ask God to fill you up today as you stay connected to him.
Practice: Write or say a prayer to God, asking him to be the source of your joy today. Ask him to show you the ways he fills you up – especially in small, often-overlooked ways.
